Amitav Ghosh is a contemporary Indian writer who has distinguished himself with his incredible passion for writing and winning over several prestigious awards for it.
He has also been honored with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award in the year 2007 for his remarkable contributions to English fiction. His notable works include: The Glass Palace, Sea of Poppies and River of Smoke. He began his journey as a professional teacher. He has taught in Indian as well as American Universities. It was after finishing his PhD thesis that he realized he wanted to pursue a career in writing.
Though his realization came a bit late, he was ready for all the risks involved for he knew that the road ahead is not smooth. He sets on journeys across borders by himself in order to do researches and collect data for his books as he likes to emphasize on the details and wants to make every character or situation in the novel appear natural.
His novels are a wonderful display of his own hardwork and ideas that get reflected in his narratives. That is why, they are able to draw reader’s interest and are mesmerizing enough to carry them with the flow. He creates fiction with facts because he believes that facts are an important constituent of a write up.
According to him, writing goes beyond talent. In fact, one needs courage to move forward in this field. No doubt, he is a much respected and adored author in today’s times for going up to such great lengths for his passion. He writes what he feels even his slightest nostalgia. He believes that the inspiration can come from even a tiniest source and that we should be prepared for the chance.
His books have gained recognition not only in India but also across the globe for bringing up on surface some serious issues including climate change which brought him the Italian Grinzane Cavour Prize. He is also the winner of the Sahitya Akademi Award.
